Michelle Obama Nails the Grown-up Cold Shoulder Trend

Off-the-shoulder style tops are making a big comeback this season. You’ll find variations of the ‘cold shoulder’ style all over the high street in lightweight cotton and jersey knits in every imaginable colour. Although one might think that these kind of tops are only destined to be worn by a younger generation, style icon, Michelle Obama, has turned that preconception on its head.

 How She Wore it

As a mum and wife who has always been under scrutiny for everything she has worn since her husband’s presidential inauguration in 2009, Michelle Obama nailed the look during her recent holiday to Italy. She chose an oversized single shouldered Teija blouse for an al fresco dinner with friends in Montalcino.

With pink being one of Summer 2017’s hottest colours, Mrs Obama chose a pink pinstripe cotton. What made this item work was its shape. Emphasis was on the shoulder and the bust area was ruched. This immediately made it clear that the style was not designed for a girl but for a woman. This was not the only amazing top she was seen wearing during the trip. Baring her shoulders once again, she selected a top with fine ties and a flounce that cut across her chest.

Befitting the Italian Mediterranean climate, she opted for white cotton fabric. It is no wonder that the world sees her as an American style icon.

How to Get That Look Down

Shoulder baring can easily go wrong. The most popular shape on the high street is the timeless Bardot neckline that fully expose both your shoulders. If you don’t feel comfortable exposing that much, you might explore designing your own a-symmetrical ‘cold shoulder’ top which can provide one shoulder of support and an interesting alternative to elastication that cuts straight across the bust area. There are beautiful, weighty cottons available from online fabric stores such as https://www.higgsandhiggs.com/fabrics/plain-cotton-fabric.html. If you keep the look loose and flowing you are bound to nail it. Pair the volume of the top with white tapered jeans or tucked into a pair of high waisted trousers. Top it off with some of the seasons hottest sandals, hoop earrings (like those worn by the former FLOTUS) and good sunglasses.

Undoubtedly, we will be following Michelle Obama’s style closely to see what new ways she will find of re-inventing classic styles.
